Cemetery Appeal

Each year around the High Holidays, I visit the graves of my grandparents in one of Buffalo’s old cemeteries.  I’ll bet you go to see the graves of your loved ones, too in the early fall.   When my grandparents and your grandparents came to this country around the turn of the 20th century, they probably didn’t think about whether or not someone would look after their grave site when they were no longer here.  They spent their time, energy and funds on feeding and educating their families, participating in their synagogue and Jewish community, and mostly trying to succeed in their new country.  We know our relatives were successful in creating a vibrant Jewish community in The New World, because we live in it.  But along the way, many of the synagogues and temples closed, Buffalo families moved all over the country, and as a result, many of the old Jewish cemeteries fell into disrepair because no one was left to take care of them.   That’s where the foresight of past Buffalonians and the compassionate mission of the Jewish Federation Cemetery Corporation stepped in.  The Jewish Federation of greater Buffalo Cemetery Corporation administers and maintains several very old Jewish cemeteries in Western New York, including B’rith Sholem, North Park Society, B’nai Israel, B’rith Israel and Anshe Emes on Pine Ridge Heritage Boulevard and Beth Jacob on Doat Street.   Thanks to a generous response from the community, we have provided much-needed maintenance and improvement in past years.  But the need continues, and we ask you once again to supporting this effort. While we all take care of the graves of our own family members, as Jews we are obligated to assume that burden for those for whom there are no survivors.  For the past twenty-five years, our Corporation has fulfilled this sacred obligation of providing maintenance for so many buried in these cemeteries.  We provide ongoing upkeep to the properties and perpetual care to grave sites.  We keep records of burials and entitlements, and we make burial plots available at reasonable cost to community members.  In the coming year, we anticipate further cleanup of trees damaged in the storm, and we hope to make as many long-range improvements to the properties as our resources may allow.

This year, please consider making a gift to the Cemetery Corporation so that, together, we can continue its important work.  Click on the link to make a donation to the Cemetery Corporation now.
